Graphite Electrode

The task of the electrode is to provide electricity for the melting chamber. The quality of the electrode is mainly determined by the raw materials used and the manufacturing method. When buying an electrode, properties and things such as specific weight, permeability, coefficient of thermal expansion, electrical resistance, tensile and bending strength, modulus of elasticity and resistance to thermal shock should be considered.

The end part of each electrode is a conical screw, inside which a nipple can be screwed. The brain should also have good mechanical strength and not create additional resistance.

In general, there are two types of electrodes:

1. SDGE: Small Diameter Graphite Electrodes
These types of electrodes are used in electric arc furnaces. These electrodes cause the melting of the materials inside the furnace, which is mostly scrap iron, by transferring electric current and creating an electric arc.

The amount of passing electric current: 15,000 to 70,000 amperes

2. Large Diameter Graphite Electrodes - LDGE: Large Diameter Graphite Electrodes
These type of electrodes are used to create a very strong electric arc and a very high temperature due to the high power of current transmission. Steelmaking and steel smelting industries have very strong electric arc furnaces and need this type of electrodes.

The amount of passing electricity: 60,000 to 160,000 amperes

The main difference between SDGE and LDGE:

Petroleum coke is often used in the production of small diameter electrodes, regardless of their grade. Sometimes, to increase the quality, different degrees are combined with each other. But in the production of large diameter electrodes, it can be said that 100% high quality needle coke is used.
